Sentul
Sentul chickens, often called ayam Sentul in Indonesia, are a local chicken breed from the Ciamis area of West Java. They are part of the diverse kampung chicken tradition but have been selected more deliberately for farm production than many unmanaged village flocks. Birds are medium-sized, active, and commonly associated with grey, black, or speckled plumage, with named local varieties based on feather color. In Indonesia the breed is valued as a dual-purpose bird for eggs and meat, and it is often discussed in smallholder development and local genetic-resource programs.
Sentul management usually fits tropical semi-intensive systems: birds forage during the day but perform better when given supplemental feed, clean water, nest sites, and protection at night. They are not meant to match industrial broilers or layer hybrids, yet selected lines can grow faster and lay more consistently than ordinary village chickens. Breeders working with Sentul flocks pay attention to adaptation, fertility, body weight, egg numbers, and preservation of local type. Outside Indonesia, buyers should verify that stock is genuinely descended from Sentul lines rather than general mixed kampung chickens.
