Sicilian Buttercup
The Sicilian Buttercup is a Mediterranean chicken breed whose cup-shaped comb forms a ring of points rather than a single blade. It traces to Sicily and later became established in exhibition poultry, especially in golden and silver color varieties. The birds are light, active, and alert, with a stylish outline and a strong identity built around the unusual comb.
Sicilian Buttercups fit keepers who enjoy lively ornamental layers, but they need secure fencing because they can be quick and flighty. Their comb is a defining feature and should be protected from frost in cold climates. Breeders select for comb shape, color pattern, body type, laying ability, fertility, and general vigor while avoiding birds with distorted or weak combs. They are not heavy table chickens, so expectations should center on eggs, beauty, and breed preservation.
