Siciliana
The Siciliana is an Italian chicken breed from Sicily, closely tied to the cup or buttercup comb seen in Sicilian poultry. It is a Mediterranean type: relatively light, active, heat-tolerant, and suited to foraging. Color names and exact standards vary by country, but the Siciliana's regional identity and unusual comb separate it from ordinary barnyard chickens.
Keepers should give Siciliana chickens room to move, secure fences, and shade in hot weather. In colder regions, the comb needs protection from frost and wet wind. Breeders should work from documented stock because the breed can be confused with related Sicilian Buttercup lines or birds selected only for comb novelty. Selection should balance comb structure, vigor, egg production, fertility, and the active but manageable temperament expected of Mediterranean breeds.
