Sumatra Chicken
The Sumatra chicken is a long-tailed, game-influenced breed developed from Indonesian island stock and refined by poultry fanciers. It has a lean body, glossy plumage, a low comb, and a tail that can sweep behind mature males. Black is the classic color, though other varieties exist in some standards. The breed is valued mostly for appearance, heritage, and exhibition type.
Keeping Sumatra chickens requires attention to space and feather condition. Runs should be secure and arranged so tails are not constantly broken or dragged through mud. Birds are active and may fly better than heavier breeds, so covered pens are useful. Breeders should select for balanced carriage, fertility, healthy legs, and appropriate temperament. Mature males may need separation, and buyers should expect modest egg production compared with utility layers.
