Sundheimer
The Sundheimer is a German dual-purpose chicken from the Baden region, developed for eggs and table use. It has a substantial body, a steady temperament, and light plumage with darker neck and tail markings in the classic form. Many birds have feathered legs, though not the extreme foot feathering seen in some ornamental breeds. The breed remains a traditional farm chicken with conservation interest.
Sundheimers need enough room and balanced feed to support their larger frame without becoming sluggish. Dry litter is important because feathered legs can collect dirt. Breeders should select for body depth, correct color, feathering, fertility, laying, and calm handling. The breed can fit small farms that want a dependable dual-purpose chicken, but rare-breed sourcing matters. Generic light-colored crosses should not be passed off as Sundheimers without provenance.
