Svrljig Black
The Svrljig Black is a Serbian chicken associated with the Svrljig region and identified by black plumage. It is a rare local breed or population rather than a widely distributed commercial type. Its value lies in regional adaptation, cultural identity, and the preservation of Balkan poultry genetics that might otherwise be replaced by generic layers and broilers.
Svrljig Black chickens should be kept with the same practical standards as other hardy farm birds: safe housing, clean water, balanced feed, and room to move. Breeders should select for the expected black color, sound body, fertility, and livability, while keeping origin records that distinguish the line from ordinary black mixed chickens. Conservation flocks need enough unrelated birds and careful replacement choices so rarity does not turn into weak vigor.
