Tellicherry
The Tellicherry chicken is an Indian native chicken associated with the Tellicherry or Thalassery region of Kerala. It is a local farm bird, often valued for adaptation to humid tropical conditions, household meat and egg use, and the cultural importance of indigenous poultry. Appearance can vary by line, so the breed is best recognized through origin and maintained population traits rather than a single color.
Tellicherry chickens need housing that handles heat, heavy rain, and parasites common in humid regions. Dry night shelter, good drainage, clean water, and regular health checks are important. Breeders should choose birds for fertility, disease resistance, laying, growth, and the traits expected in their local line. If birds are moved outside Kerala, keep records of source and avoid crossing them casually with other native chickens unless the breeding goal is clearly documented.
