Tomaru
Tomaru is one of Japan's long-crowing chicken breeds, traditionally associated with northern Honshu and often recognized by dark plumage and an unusually drawn-out male crow. The breed is kept less for meat or egg output than for the sound, carriage, and heritage of long-crowing fowl. Its identity is therefore easy to misunderstand if judged only by body size or feather color; the voice is a central breed feature.
Tomaru ownership requires ordinary chicken care plus realistic planning around noise. Roosters bred for long calls can be difficult in dense neighborhoods, so suitable zoning, distance from neighbors, and secure housing are practical considerations before acquiring birds. Breeding programs should listen as well as look, balancing crow length and tone with health, fertility, leg soundness, and calm handling. Because long-crowing breeds can be rare outside Japan, careful sourcing and clear line records help protect both the birds and the people trying to maintain them.
