Tsushima-Jidori
Tsushima-Jidori is a Japanese native chicken associated with Tsushima, the island between Kyushu and the Korean Peninsula. As a jidori, it represents a local chicken lineage rather than a modern commercial cross. Island origin matters because isolated poultry populations can retain old traits, regional preferences, and genetic patterns that disappear when flocks are replaced by faster-growing industrial birds.
Keepers of Tsushima-Jidori should treat the birds as heritage stock with a narrow population base. Secure pens are important, but the birds also need enough room to express the alert movement typical of native chickens. Breeding plans should avoid repeated close matings when possible and should not mix in other Japanese breeds simply to improve appearance or numbers. For conservation, the strongest flock is one with known source history, healthy reproduction, and enough consistency that the Tsushima identity remains clear.
