Ukokkei
Ukokkei is the Japanese name commonly applied to Silkie-type black-boned chickens with silky feathering, dark skin and bones, feathered legs, and a soft, rounded outline. In Japan, these birds have been valued for ornamental keeping, specialty food traditions, and the cultural interest of black-boned poultry. The label describes a recognizable type, but individual lines can differ in crest size, feather quality, color, and production ability.
Care for Ukokkei birds needs attention to feather texture and body condition. Silky feathers do not shed water like normal hard feathering, so dry housing and protected range are important in wet climates. Feathered feet benefit from clean litter, and crested birds may need visibility checks if head feathering becomes heavy. Breeders usually balance appearance with fertility, broodiness, and sound legs, because soft plumage and decorative traits are only useful when the chickens remain healthy and able to thrive in ordinary flock routines.
