Vanaraja
Vanaraja is an Indian dual-purpose chicken developed for rural and backyard poultry systems, especially where birds need to range, grow well, and provide eggs without the full demands of intensive commercial strains. The name means king of the forest, reflecting its role as a hardy, colorful bird for semi-scavenging conditions. Vanaraja chickens are generally larger and more productive than unimproved village birds while still being intended for smallholder management.
Farmers often keep Vanaraja in systems that combine daytime ranging with night shelter, kitchen scraps or local feed, and vaccination or basic health support where available. The birds need secure housing because their value is quickly lost to predators, theft, or disease outbreaks. Breeding and supply usually matter more than show selection; chicks should come from reliable programs or hatcheries that maintain the strain's intended performance. For rural households, the practical appeal is balanced meat and egg production under conditions less controlled than a commercial poultry house.
