Xiaoshan
Xiaoshan chickens come from the Xiaoshan area of Zhejiang and are among the better-known Chinese local chicken types. They are often described as a larger native dual-purpose bird, with yellow or buff-toned plumage appearing in many accounts and a reputation for useful meat and egg production. The breed reflects the older farm need for chickens that could forage, reproduce, and supply household food without industrial inputs.
Xiaoshan birds are better judged as locally adapted farm chickens than as high-output commercial layers. Flocks benefit from room to move, clean roosting space, and balanced feed that supports both laying hens and growing table birds. Breeding choices should keep size, fertility, and local type in balance. When birds are sold as Xiaoshan, source matters, since regional Chinese breed names can be copied more easily than the genetic background behind them.
