Yamato Gunkei
Yamato Gunkei is a Japanese gamefowl breed with a powerful, compact build, broad stance, muscular body, and a distinctly rugged head and face. The name connects it with Japan's old game chicken traditions, but modern keepers usually discuss it as an exhibition and preservation bird. Compared with taller Shamo types, Yamato Gunkei tends to look lower, heavier, and more massive for its size.
This is a breed for experienced poultry keepers rather than someone seeking a quiet layer flock. Adult males can be assertive and may need individual housing, strong fencing, and careful handling. Egg production is secondary to type, vigor, and breed character. Breeders should select for sound legs, balanced mass, correct carriage, and calm manageability, while avoiding management practices that treat fighting history as a reason to neglect welfare or legal responsibilities.
