Yerevanian
Yerevanian chickens are an Armenian breed associated with Yerevan and the poultry breeding traditions of the South Caucasus. They are generally described as dual-purpose birds, developed for usable egg production and meat while tolerating continental conditions that can include hot summers and cold winters. Plumage is often red, buff, or brown-toned in accounts of the breed, though local lines may differ.
For owners, the Yerevanian is best understood as a practical regional breed rather than a decorative rarity. Good housing should handle temperature swings, with shade and water in heat and dry, draft-aware shelter in winter. Breeders should select for body depth, laying ability, hatchability, and adaptation, while keeping the Armenian source clear. Outside the region, preserving the breed means resisting the urge to blend it into generic red dual-purpose stock.
