Yurlov Crower
The Yurlov Crower is an old Russian chicken breed selected for the long, resonant crow of the males. It developed as a large farm bird, with selection shaped by both utility and crowing contests in parts of eastern Europe and Russia. Yurlovs are often tall, powerful, slow-maturing chickens with variable dark, silver, red, or mixed plumage rather than a single narrow color identity.
Keepers choose Yurlov Crowers for heritage breeding, meat and egg use, and the unusual vocal trait, but that voice is also a practical management issue. Roosters can be very loud and are unsuitable for many suburban settings. Breeding programs need patience because mature type, voice quality, and size take time to evaluate. Since the breed is uncommon outside its home region, careful sourcing and flock records help preserve useful lines without losing the characteristic crow.
