Zwerg-Altsteirer
The Zwerg-Altsteirer is the bantam form of the Altsteirer, a Styrian chicken breed from Austria and nearby regions. It keeps the old-country character of the larger bird in a smaller package: an active body, alert carriage, and the familiar crest or swept head feathering associated with Altsteirer type. Color varieties differ by registry, but white and partridge-type birds are among the best known.
Keepers use Zwerg-Altsteirer chickens for heritage bantam breeding, exhibition, and small-space egg production where a lively forager is welcome. They are not ornamental lap birds in the same way as many feather-heavy bantams; they benefit from room, perches, and a secure run. Breeders should protect the breed outline, crest balance, and hardiness while avoiding oversized birds that drift away from bantam purpose. Clear records help distinguish true bantam lines from small large-fowl offspring.
