Zwerg-Krüper
The Zwerg-Krüper is the bantam form of the Krüper, a German short-legged chicken with roots in the Westphalia and Bergisches Land region. Its defining feature is the low-set body carried on shortened legs, giving the breed a ground-hugging look that is very different from ordinary bantams. Feather color varies by standard, but leg length and correct body balance are central to the type.
Keeping Zwerg-Krüper chickens requires attention to practical comfort. Low birds need housing without steep ramps, dry litter that does not cake around the legs, and protection from rough larger flockmates. Breeders also need to understand the inheritance of short-legged traits, since some matings can reduce hatch success. Selection should balance the traditional silhouette with sound movement, vigor, and normal feeding behavior rather than exaggerating shortness at the expense of welfare.
