Anglo-Français de Petite Vénerie
The Anglo-Français de Petite Vénerie is a French pack scenthound created from English hounds and French hunting lines for small-game hunting. The word petite refers to the type of hunt, such as hare and rabbit, rather than to a toy-sized dog; these hounds are medium to large, long-legged, and built for many hours on a scent. Depending on the line, coats may be tricolor, black and white, or white and orange, with a short, practical texture. The breed's voice, stamina, and ability to work in a coordinated pack are more central to its identity than show-ring outline.
Most are kept by hunters or rural hound enthusiasts rather than as casual city pets. They do best with regular scent work, running space, secure fencing, and companionship from people or other compatible dogs. A bored Anglo-Français can be noisy and determined, especially if wildlife crosses its path. Grooming is simple, but feet, ears, and condition need attention during hunting season. Prospective owners should look for breeders who can explain working style, steadiness in the pack, and how puppies are raised around handling and transport.
