Armenian Gampr
The Armenian Gampr is a large livestock guardian and general farm dog from the Armenian Highlands. The name gampr is used for native Armenian wolfhound-type dogs rather than a narrowly uniform show breed, so working lines can vary in coat length, color, and size. Common traits include a powerful head, strong bone, deep chest, weather-resistant coat, and a calm but forceful attitude toward threats. For centuries these dogs have guarded sheep, goats, homes, and camps from predators and intruders in rugged mountain country.
A Gampr needs management that respects its independent guardian instincts. It is usually happiest with stock, acreage, or a serious property role, plus secure fencing and steady early exposure to the animals and people it is expected to accept. Heavy-handed training can create conflict, while inconsistent handling leaves the dog to make too many decisions alone. Puppies should grow slowly on sensible nutrition to protect joints, and breeding stock should be evaluated for hips, temperament, and true Armenian working ancestry. Preservation-minded breeders try to keep the landrace from being blurred into neighboring Caucasian or Central Asian guardian types.
