Austrian Black and Tan Hound
The Austrian black and tan hound, or Brandlbracke, is a medium-sized scenthound from Austria's mountain hunting tradition. Its German nickname Vieräugl, meaning four-eyed, refers to the small tan spots above the eyes. The breed is built lean and athletic rather than heavy, with a short black coat, rich tan markings, long drop ears, and a steady nose for hare and fox. It belongs to the bracke group of Central European hounds, dogs expected to follow cold scent over steep country and give tongue while working.
In homes, this is best understood as a working hound first and a companion second. It needs daily hard exercise, scent work, tracking, or hunting access, and a secure area because interesting scent can override recall. The short coat is easy to keep, but ears, feet, and skin should be checked after time in brush or snow. Austrian black and tan hounds are typically even with family, though early socialization helps them live calmly with visitors and other dogs. Buyers outside Austria may need patience, since good breeders tend to place pups where field ability and temperament will be used and protected.
