Barak Hound
The Barak hound is the Bosnian broken-haired hound, called the bosanski oštrodlaki gonič-Barak in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is a medium scenthound bred for hunting hare, fox, and sometimes wild boar in rough Balkan terrain. The breed has a harsh shaggy coat, bushy eyebrows, a moustache and beard, drop ears, and a sturdy body built for persistence rather than sprint speed. Coat color is commonly wheaten, reddish yellow, grayish, or dark-tipped, often with white markings depending on the standard.
This hound belongs in active hands. It needs long walks, scenting outlets, and secure off-leash access only where hunting or tracking is safe and legal. A Barak can be warm at home, but in the field it is expected to work independently and use its voice, so recall and quiet household manners take steady training. The rough coat should be brushed and stripped or tidied as needed, with burrs removed after hunting. Ears and pads deserve regular checks.
