Basque Shepherd Dog
The Basque Shepherd Dog, also known as the Euskal Artzain Txakurra or Perro de Pastor Vasco, is a herding dog from the Basque Country of northern Spain. It developed around sheep and farm work rather than as a show-ring creation. Two main varieties are usually described: the smoother Gorbeiakoa and the rougher, shaggier Iletsua. Both are medium-sized, agile dogs with lively expression, a weather-resistant coat, and the quick reactions needed for moving stock across uneven ground.
A Basque Shepherd Dog usually needs stock work, farm routines, or structured training that gives its energy a clear outlet. Without direction, herding instinct may show up as chasing bikes, barking at movement, or nipping at heels. Coat care varies by variety, with the Iletsua needing more attention around the ears, tail, and feathering. Because the breed remains uncommon outside Spain, prospective owners often work through breed clubs and should confirm variety, pedigree, and working background before choosing a puppy.
