Basset Artésien Normand
The Basset Artésien Normand is a French short-legged scenthound from the Artois and Normandy regions. It was developed for hunting rabbit and hare at a pace that hunters could follow on foot. Compared with the heavier English Basset Hound, it is lighter, more moderate, and built for steady movement through cover. The breed has long ears, a soft hound expression, a low body, and a short coat most often seen in tricolor or fawn and white.
In the home, this basset is usually sociable and even-tempered, but it remains a nose-led hound. A secure yard matters because a fresh track can override recall, and training needs patience rather than force. Moderate walks, scent games, and controlled hunting work fit the breed better than hard running. Weight control protects the back, elbows, and feet. The ears should be checked often, and nails must be kept short so the dog can move correctly on its low frame.
