Black and Tan Coonhound
The Black and Tan Coonhound is an American scenthound developed from foxhound and Bloodhound ancestry for trailing raccoons and other game through rough country at night. Its black coat with tan points, long low-set ears, loose skin, and deep bawl voice all reflect that hunting background. A good Black and Tan follows older scent patiently, works at a steady pace, and trees game by voice so a handler can locate it. The breed is recognized as a distinct coonhound rather than just a color of hound.
Many Black and Tans are mellow in the house, but they are large, vocal dogs with a strong desire to follow a trail. Secure fencing, leash walks, and scent-based exercise prevent many problems. Their short coat needs little grooming, while ears and skin folds deserve routine cleaning and drying. Weight control matters because the breed can become heavy and lose working condition. Breeders and buyers commonly discuss hip health, eye checks, thyroid issues, and bloat awareness, especially for dogs expected to hunt hard or live as active family companions.
