Blue Picardy Spaniel
The Blue Picardy spaniel is a French gundog from the Picardy region, closely related to the Picardy spaniel and shaped in part by British setter influence. In its homeland it is called the Epagneul Bleu de Picardie. The breed is medium to large for a spaniel, with a long, low-slung outline, feathered ears and legs, and a blue-gray roan coat created by black patches and ticking on a pale background. It was developed for hunters who needed a calm, hardy pointing and retrieving dog for wet fields, marshes, and woodland edges.
This is an active sporting dog rather than a couch-bred companion, though many are gentle in the house when their field needs are met. Regular off-leash exercise in safe areas, training that uses its nose, and seasonal attention to burrs in the feathering keep it comfortable. The coat does not require sculpted grooming, but ears need checking after swimming or brush work. The breed remains uncommon outside France and Canada, so buyers may encounter small breeder networks and waiting lists. Soundness, working temperament, and clear health records matter more than a particularly dark or pale shade of blue roan.
