Braque du Bourbonnais
The Braque du Bourbonnais is an old French pointing dog from the Bourbonnais region of central France. It is compact, muscular, and shorter backed than many braques, with a soft expression and a short coat patterned in fine liver or fawn ticking on a white background. Breed literature often describes the liver-roan look as wine lees and the fawn version as peach blossom. Natural short tails occur in the breed and helped shape its traditional outline.
Although it nearly disappeared in the twentieth century, the Braque du Bourbonnais has been rebuilt by dedicated hunting breeders. It is generally kept as a versatile bird dog and close companion, not as a kennel ornament. Regular field exercise, patient handling, and early socialization help it develop into a steady house dog and useful hunting partner. Because the population is still limited in many countries, puppy buyers should ask about health testing, working ability, and how much genetic diversity the breeder is trying to preserve.
