Braque Français
The Braque Français is a French pointing dog with two recognized regional types: the larger Braque Français, type Gascogne, and the smaller, lighter Braque Français, type Pyrénées. Both are short-coated bird dogs from southwestern France, usually brown, brown-and-white, or brown-ticked, with a gentle head and a practical working build. They represent an old continental pointer tradition in which one dog was expected to search, point, retrieve, and stay attentive to the hunter on foot.
For owners, the type matters. The Pyrenean form is more common in some countries and may be handier for active households, while the Gascogne tends to be more substantial. Both need regular running, scent work, and kind, consistent training; harsh handling can dull their natural willingness. Grooming is simple, but ears should be checked after field days. When choosing a puppy, ask whether the parents are hunted, field tested, or evaluated for hips and other sporting-dog health issues.
