Briquet Griffon Vendéen
The Briquet Griffon Vendéen is a medium French scenthound from the Vendée region on the Atlantic side of France. It descends from larger griffon hounds but was selected in a smaller, handier size for pack hunting. Its rough, tousled coat, beard, strong voice, and energetic carriage give it the classic look of a rustic French griffon. The breed is used on hare, roe deer, and other game, depending on local hunting tradition.
Despite the word briquet, this is not a toy dog; it is a working hound that needs movement, scenting opportunities, and secure containment. Many do well with other dogs because of their pack background, but their independence can challenge owners who expect instant obedience off leash. The harsh coat benefits from regular brushing and occasional hand work to remove dead hair, while ears should be checked after wet or thorny cover. Buyers should seek breeders who understand both working drive and household temperament.
