Bucovina Shepherd Dog
The Bucovina Shepherd Dog is a large Romanian livestock guardian from the Bucovina region of northeastern Romania and nearby mountain country. Also called the Romanian Bucovina Shepherd or Ciobănesc Românesc de Bucovina, it was developed to stay with sheep and cattle, warn off intruders, and confront wolves, bears, and stray dogs when necessary. It is a heavy-boned, imposing dog with a broad head, drop ears, a thick double coat, and a strong, resonant bark. The coat is usually white or light with large black, gray, brindle, or sand-colored patches.
This is a rural guardian, not a decorative giant. Bucovina Shepherd Dogs need space, secure boundaries, and owners who understand that independence and night barking are part of the job. Puppies should be calmly socialized with people and stock while still learning that livestock are to be protected, not chased. Brushing is important during seasonal shedding, and the size of the breed makes orthopedic screening, steady growth, and weight control worthwhile. In suburban homes the same protective instincts require careful management of guests, deliveries, and neighborhood dogs.
