Continental Toy Spaniel
The Continental toy spaniel is the European toy spaniel breed that includes the Papillon, with upright butterfly-like ears, and the Phalene, with drop ears. It is an old companion dog seen in European art for centuries, especially in France, Belgium, Spain, and Italy. Small, fine-boned, and lively, it has a silky single coat, plumed tail, and a white base with colored patches that frame the face and ears.
Despite its size, the Continental toy spaniel is an active, trainable dog used in obedience, agility, rally, and therapy work as well as companionship. The coat needs brushing through the ear fringes, chest, and tail, but it does not have the dense grooming demands of many long-coated toy breeds. Dental care, patella checks, and careful handling around children or larger dogs are practical concerns. Litters may include both ear types in some lines, and naming differs by registry, so buyers should confirm whether a dog is recorded as Papillon, Phalene, or Continental toy spaniel.
