Estrela Mountain Dog
The Estrela mountain dog is a large Portuguese livestock guardian from the Serra da Estrela, where it was used to protect flocks and property in rugged mountain conditions. It comes in long-coated and short-coated forms, with a strong body, broad head, dense weather-resistant coat, and a serious guardian temperament. Fawn, brindle, and wolf-gray shades are commonly associated with the breed.
Estrelas are best suited to owners who understand guardian dogs and can provide space, fencing, socialization, and calm leadership. They are often devoted to family but may be reserved with strangers and independent when making decisions. Coat care varies by type, with long-coated dogs needing more brushing during shed. Breeders should prioritize stable nerves, sound hips and elbows, correct size, and working character. Buyers should ask whether a line is bred for livestock work, estate guarding, or companion life.
