German Longhaired Pointer
The German Longhaired Pointer, known in Germany as the Deutsch Langhaar, is a versatile gundog developed for pointing, retrieving, and tracking before and after the shot. It combines the outline of a continental pointer with a longer, feathered coat that protects it in rough cover and cold water. The breed is usually brown, brown and white, or brown roan, with a calm but purposeful expression, strong body, and a tail carried as part of its field communication.
This is a hunting dog that expects close partnership and regular training, not just occasional exercise. It can live well with an active family when given field work, advanced obedience, tracking, or other structured outlets. The coat needs brushing to remove burrs and prevent mats on the ears, belly, and tail, and ears should be checked after swimming or heavy cover. In many German-influenced breeding systems, dogs are selected through performance tests, so buyers should ask how a litter's working ability, hips, temperament, and cooperation match their intended use.
