German Shorthaired Pointer
The German Shorthaired Pointer, often called the GSP, is a versatile hunting dog developed in Germany for pointing, retrieving, and tracking. It is lean, fast, and built for long days in the field, with a short dense coat, drop ears, a keen nose, and a social working temperament. Liver, liver and white, ticking, patched coats, and roan patterns are classic; black is accepted in some standards. The breed is used for upland birds, water retrieves, blood tracking, field trials, and active sport homes.
Expect a high-output dog rather than a casual backyard pet. Safe running time, recall work, scent training, retrieving, and steady manners around wildlife are central to living with one. The coat is easy to maintain, but ears should be checked after swimming or hunting, and the thin coat offers limited protection in cold water or harsh brush. Good breeders screen for hip issues, eye disease, cardiac concerns, and bloat history. Many become close house dogs, but the hunting drive still needs a real outlet.
