German Spaniel
Known in Germany as the Deutscher Wachtelhund, the German spaniel is a medium-sized flushing and retrieving dog maintained mainly for practical hunting. Wachtelhund translates roughly as quail dog, but the breed is used far beyond quail, with strong scenting ability, a voice on game, and enough determination to work dense cover. It usually carries a wavy or curly medium-length coat in brown, red, roan, or marked patterns, with a sturdy body and spaniel-like ears.
Most German spaniels are placed with hunters or very active handlers rather than casual pet homes. They need fieldwork, tracking, water retrieves, or comparable scent-based exercise to stay manageable. The coat benefits from brushing after cover work, and the ears need routine attention because they trap moisture and debris. In many breeding communities, hunt performance and temperament carry as much weight as appearance, so a prospective home should learn how a line is used before choosing a puppy.
