Greenland Dog
The Greenland dog, or Kalaallit qimmiat, is a powerful Arctic sled dog native to Greenland and closely tied to Inuit travel and hunting culture. Built for hauling over sea ice and tundra, it has prick ears, a curled tail, a dense double coat, and a strong pack temperament. Traditional teams often work in a fan hitch, where endurance, toughness, and independence matter more than close obedience to every cue.
This is a working northern dog best understood in the context of sled teams, cold weather kennels, and experienced primitive-breed homes. It needs hard exercise, secure containment, and careful pack management; heat and inactivity are bigger problems than cold. The coat sheds heavily and protects well when kept clean and dry. In parts of Greenland, movement and import rules help protect the local sled dog population from crossbreeding and disease, so prospective owners should treat the breed as cultural heritage as well as a domestic dog.
