Griffon Bruxellois
Small but sturdy, the Griffon Bruxellois is a Belgian toy dog developed around Brussels from stable dogs, terrier-like ratters, and later toy companion crosses. Depending on registry, the name may refer specifically to the rough-coated red variety, while Brussels Griffon can be used more broadly for related rough and smooth-coated dogs. A short muzzle, large dark eyes, undershot jaw, square body, and humanlike expression are central to the type.
Daily life with a Griffon Bruxellois is usually indoor and close to its people, but the dog still needs training, play, and protection from rough handling. Rough coats are commonly hand-stripped or clipped, while smooth coats need simple brushing. The flat face and prominent eyes require sensible heat management and prompt attention to breathing, dental crowding, or eye injuries. Patella, heart, and airway considerations make careful breeder selection worthwhile, especially because small litters and registry definitions can complicate searches.
