Griffon Fauve de Bretagne
The Griffon Fauve de Bretagne is a medium French scenthound from Brittany, recognized by its rough fawn coat and lively, rustic outline. It descends from the old Fauve de Bretagne hounds, which were once larger pack dogs used on challenging quarry. Today's griffon is smaller and more versatile, hunting hare, fox, deer, or wild boar depending on local practice, with a strong nose and a voice that carries through cover.
Active hunting homes suit the breed best, although some individuals live as companions where scent work, hiking, and secure outdoor space are part of the routine. The coat should look harsh rather than sculpted, needing brushing, burr removal, and occasional tidying. Drop ears deserve regular checks, particularly after wet fields. Griffon Fauves are often sociable with other dogs because of their pack background, but prey drive, independence, and barking should be expected. Outside France, informed breeders are limited and working temperament may matter more than show polish.
