Hanoverian Scenthound
The Hanoverian Scenthound, or Hannoverscher Schweisshund, is a German blood-tracking hound from Lower Saxony. The word Schweisshund refers to following the blood scent of wounded game, a task historically handled by disciplined leash hounds working with foresters and hunters. This breed is medium to large, solidly built, and serious in expression, with pendulous ears and a close coat in red, fawn-red, or brindled tones. It is bred to work slowly, accurately, and with great persistence on cold tracks.
A Hanoverian Scenthound is best placed with handlers who can provide tracking practice, field access, and clear structure from puppyhood. Many are settled with their own household, but their purpose and scent focus make them a poor match for owners who want only a casual urban pet. Secure containment, lead work, and careful recall training are essential. In regions where working clubs manage the breed, breeding approval may depend on health, conformation, and tracking tests, so availability can be limited and purpose-driven.
