Ibizan Hound
The Ibizan hound, known in its homeland as the Podenco Ibicenco or Ca Eivissenc, is a rabbit-hunting hound from Ibiza and the Balearic Islands of Spain. It is a tall, lean, long-legged dog with large upright ears, amber eyes, and either a smooth or wire coat, most often in red, white, or red and white. Although often described as ancient in type, the modern breed is best understood as an island podenco shaped by generations of practical hunting.
Ibizan hounds use sight, scent, and hearing, and many can jump with startling ease, so ordinary low fencing is a poor match for the breed. They are sensitive dogs that respond well to patient training and off-leash freedom only in safely enclosed places, since rabbits, cats, and fast movement can trigger pursuit. Their light coat and low body fat make warmth, bedding, and careful veterinary handling sensible considerations. They can live peaceably with other dogs when socialized, reflecting their history of pack hunting, but small animals in the household require caution.
