Kaikadi
The Kaikadi is a rare Indian hunting dog associated with the Kaikadi people of Maharashtra. It is usually described as a small to medium, leggy terrier or hound-type dog rather than a standardized show breed. Traditional dogs are lean, quick, and sharp-eyed, with a narrow head, short coat, and large ears that may stand or semi-stand. They were kept for hunting hare and small game, controlling vermin, and alerting camps or homesteads to strangers.
Because the Kaikadi remains mostly a local working type, size, color, and exact appearance can vary more than in registry-bred dogs. It suits handlers who understand high prey drive, territorial behavior, and the need for daily free movement in a safe area. The short coat is easy to maintain, but the dog is not well matched to a sedentary indoor life. Buyers outside India should expect limited documentation and should ask practical questions about parent temperament, health, and working background.
