Karelian Bear Dog
The Karelian Bear Dog, or Karjalankarhukoira, is a Finnish and Karelian spitz-type hunting dog developed for large game. It is medium-sized, black with clear white markings, prick-eared, and tightly built for moving through forest and snow. Rather than chasing silently, it locates game such as bear, moose, or wild boar and holds it by barking and agile pressure until the hunter arrives. Its courage has also led some wildlife agencies to use the breed in non-lethal bear hazing programs.
Life with a Karelian Bear Dog requires more than ordinary walks. It is energetic, vocal, prey-driven, and often selective with other dogs, so secure fencing and structured training are important from puppyhood. The double coat is straightforward to brush but sheds heavily during seasonal coat changes. Homes that hunt, track, hike, or train scent and obedience work usually suit the breed best. Prospective owners should seek breeders who understand working temperament and avoid softening the dog's alert nature into either nervousness or uncontrolled aggression.
