Kars
The Kars dog is a Turkish livestock guardian type from the cold northeastern provinces around Kars, Ardahan, and neighboring highlands. It is a large, heavily coated mountain dog used to protect sheep, cattle, and rural property in severe winter country. Compared with the short-coated Kangal, Kars dogs are often shaggier and more variable in color and outline, reflecting their landrace background and the influence of regional Caucasian and Anatolian guardian populations.
Kars dogs are rare outside Turkey and are not as uniformly standardized as many international breeds. They are best suited to experienced guardian-dog homes with secure acreage, clear routines, and livestock or territory to watch. The coat needs regular attention during shedding and can be uncomfortable in hot, humid climates. Early socialization should teach the dog who belongs on the property without weakening its natural suspicion of threats. Buyers should distinguish true regional working dogs from casual crosses sold under a rare-breed name.
