King Charles Spaniel
The King Charles Spaniel is a small British toy spaniel, known as the English Toy Spaniel in some registries. It is distinct from the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, being generally smaller, shorter-faced, and more domed in head. The breed descends from court and household companion spaniels and is traditionally seen in four color varieties: black and tan, tricolor, red and white Blenheim, and solid red Ruby. Its silky feathering, compact body, and gentle expression reflect its long role as a lap and parlor dog.
Daily life with a King Charles Spaniel centers on companionship rather than athletic work. Short walks, play, and calm indoor time usually suit the breed, though weight control is important. The coat needs regular combing around the ears, chest, and legs, and the face and eyes should be kept clean. Because the breed has a short muzzle, heat and strenuous exercise require care. Buyers should ask about heart, eye, patella, and breathing-related health history, and should confirm whether a breeder is discussing the King Charles Spaniel or the Cavalier.
