Lapponian Herder
The Lapponian Herder, or Lapinporokoira, is a Finnish reindeer-herding dog developed from the working dogs of the Sami people in Lapland. It is a medium-sized spitz-type dog, longer than tall, with a weatherproof coat, prick or semi-prick ears, and a practical build made for trotting behind reindeer over open ground. Compared with the fluffier Finnish Lapphund, the Lapponian Herder usually has a shorter, flatter coat and a more plainly workmanlike outline. Dark colors with tan or white markings are common.
Modern Lapponian Herders still suit active homes that can give them movement, problem-solving, and a job, whether that is herding, tracking, canicross, obedience, or long outdoor days. They may use their voice when excited or when moving stock, so bark control and thoughtful socialization matter in suburbs. The coat is not difficult day to day, but it sheds heavily in season. Breeding programs commonly pay attention to hips, eyes, and working temperament, and buyers should look for dogs raised with enough exposure to people, livestock, or household life for their intended future.
