Levriero Sardo
The Levriero Sardo, or Sardinian Greyhound, is a rare sighthound landrace from Sardinia. It is not as internationally standardized as breeds such as the Greyhound or Whippet, and descriptions can vary by local line. In general it is a lean, long-legged dog with a narrow head, deep chest, tucked waist, and short coat in several colors. Sardinian hunters have used dogs of this type for coursing hare and other game, selecting more for speed, eyesight, endurance, and courage than for show-ring uniformity.
Because the Levriero Sardo is scarce outside its home region, preservation depends on careful breeding records and respect for working ability. It is a high-prey-drive dog that needs safe fencing, controlled introductions to small animals, and exercise that lets it stretch without risking roads or livestock. The thin coat and lean body call for warmth, shade, and soft resting places. Buyers should expect variation in size and temperament and should verify the source rather than assuming every Sardinian-looking sighthound represents the landrace.
