Montenegrin Mountain Hound
The Montenegrin Mountain Hound is a Balkan scent hound from Montenegro, also called Crnogorski planinski gonič. It is typically a medium-sized black-and-tan hound with a smooth coat, strong voice, and the endurance needed for hunting in rough mountain and forest terrain. The breed has been used for trailing hare, fox, and larger quarry according to local hunting tradition, with function taking priority over ornament.
This hound is best matched with owners who understand scent-driven dogs, especially because some lines remain rare outside their home region. It needs exercise, secure turnout, and training that works with nose and voice rather than fighting them. In the home, many hounds are steady and people-oriented after enough activity, but they can be difficult off leash where game scent is present. Breeders and hunters should protect sound feet, functional shoulders, clear voice, and a temperament that can work with people and other dogs.
