Mountain Feist
The Mountain Feist is a small to medium American treeing dog from the southern Appalachian and rural working-dog tradition. It is lighter than many curs, quick on its feet, and selected for alertness, speed, and a sharp interest in squirrels and other small game. The breed developed through practical selection by hunters and farm families, so local lines may vary in ear set, color, and exact size while keeping a busy working character.
Mountain Feists are lively dogs that need more than a yard and occasional attention. Hunting, scent games, agility, and structured play can help use their energy constructively, while puppies benefit from early handling and noise exposure. Because they are often vocal and highly reactive to movement, owners need secure containment and consistent recall work. A good breeder can explain whether a line is selected for close hunting, range, tree style, or family temperament, which matters more than surface color.
