Norwich Terrier
The Norwich Terrier is a small prick-eared terrier from East Anglia, closely related in origin to the Norfolk Terrier but separated by ear carriage in modern breed standards. It was developed around stables, farms, and hunting country where compact terriers controlled vermin and could work with people, horses, and other dogs. The breed has a wiry coat, sturdy bone for its size, a keen expression, and colors such as red, wheaten, grizzle, and black and tan. Its neat outline hides a very game little dog.
A Norwich Terrier often brings confidence, humor, and persistence into the home, so training should reward cooperation while setting firm limits on chasing and digging. Secure yards matter, and many enjoy earthdog-style games, scent work, and active walks. The coat is traditionally hand-stripped to maintain texture, though pet grooming may be simplified. Responsible breeders monitor airway comfort, dental health, knees, eyes, and general soundness. The breed can live well in town or country when people remember that small terriers still need jobs, rules, and safe outlets for instinct.
