Perdigueiro Galego

The Perdigueiro Galego, or Galician Pointer, is a Spanish gundog from Galicia in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. It is a regional pointing breed used to locate game in a damp, varied landscape of fields, scrub, and woodland. The dog is usually medium sized, short coated, and practical rather than flashy, with type shaped by hunters who needed nose, stamina, and cooperation. As with several Iberian pointing breeds, preservation depends on keeping local working identity visible instead of folding every dog into a generic pointer category.

Hunters value a Perdigueiro Galego for field sense, manageable range, and the ability to work close enough for real conditions rather than only trial style. Care is straightforward but active: conditioning, foot checks, ear care, and protection from thorns, ticks, and rough weather after a day outside. Companion homes need to provide scent work, exercise, and calm training or the dog may become restless. Breeders should document ancestry, working proof, and health screening, since regional breeds can lose coherence quickly when selected only for appearance or rarity.
