Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen
The petit basset griffon vendéen is a small French scenthound from the Vendée region, bred to follow rabbit and hare through rough cover. Its name describes the dog well: petit for the smaller size, basset for the low body, griffon for the harsh coat, and Vendéen for its home region. A tousled outline, white coat with lemon, orange, black, or tricolor markings, and a bold hound voice are part of the type. Despite the cheerful look, it is a working pack hound at heart.
Households do best when they plan for scent drive, noise, and independence before falling for the face. Secure fencing is important, because a trail can override recall training, and regular exercise helps the dog settle indoors. The rough coat needs brushing and occasional hand-stripping or tidy trimming depending on the line and local practice. Breeders usually pay close attention to sound legs, back length, ears, and a temperament that stays outgoing without becoming frantic.
